1. The Apartment

The 1960 rom-com Billy Wilders is often considered one of the greatest movies ever produced. That reputation is well-known.

After filming, Bud Baxter (Jack Lemmon), a solitary office worker who allows executives at his business to use his apartment for extramarital affairs. This helps him move up into the small insurance company he works at. While he does get some material gains at work, the result is his superiors profit more from his time and space, leaving Bud unable to sleep in his own bed or access his own house.

When Bud falls for an elevator operator in the building (Shirley MacLaine), his desire to establish a relationship with her gives him the confidence to return to life. However, when Bud discovers that he has had an affair with his boss (Fred MacMurray), things become even more difficult.

Wilder excels in balancing corporate fatigue and newfound love with the outstanding comedic abilities of the cast. The Apartment is one of the films you should see at least once. Pete Volk is a famous and wonderful romantic comedy.

The Apartment is available for viewing for free via a library card on Kanopy or Hoopla, or with ads on Pilot TV, Tubi, or The Roku Channel.

2. Black Dynamite

Michael Jai White is one of the great underappreciated actors of our time, and his blaxploitation parody Black Dynamite is one of the funniest films of the century. White is also involved in the film, which focuses on vengeance for his brothers’ deaths, and the film has also featured silly gags and cultural commentary. PV

Black Dynamite is available on HBO Max.

3. Book Club

Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen are all friends who have been a member of a long-standing book club. Each of them, although successful in their careers, is dealing with difficult decisions of living or love. This is why one of them selects Fifty Shades of Grey as the next book they’ll all read together, giving an idea of personal acceptance and self-realization, no matter how many phases you live in. PV

On Paramount Plus, the Book Club can be streamed.

4. Charade

Reggie (Audrey Hepburn) discovered the remainder of her life, the amount of money she has spent on Charade years before. Sadly, she was unaware of the truth about him or, for that matter, the next man in her life, Peter Joshua (Cary Grant). To make matters worse, the remaining money is missing, and a lot of terrible people think Reggie can trust.

Hepburn and Grant, two famously talented and charming actors, are at Charade’s most charming and talented. In the span of a single scene, Hepburn might transition from pragmatic to seductive to fearful with believable ease. It remains one of the few films in which the distinction is acknowledged and dealt with in every respect, rather than taken for granted. It’s His Girl Friday by Hitchcock. Jenna Stoeber

Charade is now available on Amazon Prime Video.

5. Don’t Go Breaking My Heart

Johnnie To is a great modern director who excels in hard-boiled triad crime scenes and light-hearted romantic comedy. 2011s Don’t Go Breaking My Heart is in the latter category, and it is one of the many high marks of the Hong Kong directors’ legendary career. On the other hand, there is Sean (Gao Yuanyuan), an activist who travels across the street and seeks help from Chi-Yan, and whom she feels inspired to start working again. What follows is a

Don’t Go Breaking My Heart is now available on Netflix.

6. Freaky

With his 2020 slasher comedy Freaky, the film focuses on a young girl (Newton) who accidentally switches her body with a middle-aged serial killer (Vaughn) and must find a way to avoid being murdered herself. Freaky is committed to a fabled form, with a concluding act, which is…interesting and impossible enough to be a fun finale-girl thriller. Toussaint Egan

Freaky is available on HBO Max.

7. Free Guy

Is Free Guy a must-see video game based on Fortnite, PUBG, and GTA Online? Yes. It’s a skillful video game comedy with solid performances from Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, and Taika Waititi before climaxing in an explosion of indulgent Easter egg fan service. Yes, it’s absolutely fantastic. It’s fun to watch and fun to look at, while it puts it ahead of most other video game games. TE

Free Guy is now available on Disney Plus and HBO Max.

8. The Gold Rush

The Gold Rush is a fun journey for Charlie Chaplin, who walks on a shack in the Klondike, with extreme slapstick and farce. Unlike the 1980s, Little Tramp develops a leather shoe for sustenance, culminating in a legendary fork dance. Interestingly, Chaplin is more than just the muscle icon of the United States, and his bold debut is a hilarious one. Matt Patches

The Gold Rush is now available on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

9. I Married a Witch

In the early 1930s, Rene Clair, who made his name in early French silent and sound cinema, spent several years filming in the United States during World War II. I Married a Witch, starring Veronica Lake as a witch who wishes to revoke revenge on the descendant of the man who imprisoned her.

In colonial Salem, two witches Jennifer (Lake) and her father, Daniel, are cursed by the Puritans, who denied them. He and his descendants (all played by Fredric March) will be dissatisfied in love, always marrying the wrong woman. Wallace Wooley, the latest descendant of the man who caused her execution, is also a leading candidate for governor.

I Married a Witch is a breezy 77 minutes of Classic Hollywood indulgence with costumes from Edith Head. PV

On HBO Max and Criterion channel, I Married a Witch is available.

10. Last Action Hero

A hilarious send-up of the major action movies of the time, Last Action Hero is aided by having a director in John McTiernan with real action bona fides (Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, and Predator), a real action star in Schwarzenegger in the lead, and an all-time over-the-top villain performance from Dance.

The Last Action Hero is now available on Netflix.

11. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Wes Anderson’s intimate 2004 ensemble comedy is an homage to Jacques Cousteau, and it is a heartfelt (and painful) homage to the legendary French oceanographer. While he is working on his project, Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) sets out for his next project: to find and kill the shark, and to film the whole thing.

Anjelica Huston (a Zissou’s estranged wife who works), Willem Dafoe (an emotionally ill-prepared German first mate), Owen Wilson (a Zissou fan who believes he is Zissou’s son), and Jeff Goldblum (playing Zissou’s rival, a more successful oceanographer) are among the cast members. PVD provides an excellent viewing experience for young people.

With a library card on Hoopla, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is available for download.

12. Little Monsters

best zombie comedies

Dave, a well-known and down-on-his-luck rock musician has agreed to accompany Miss Caroline on a field trip to a petting zoo. Unfortunately for them, the class will struggle to gain ground in the undead horde. We will not spoil it, but we will tell you that Josh Gad is slammed by zombies in the process. TE

Little Monsters is available on Hulu.

13. Love & Friendship

Kate Beckinsale plays Lady Susan in one of her most hilarious (and most surprising) roles in Jane Austen’s Lady Susan. She is a young widow looking for suitable relationships for her daughter (Morfydd Clark) and herself. Susan flirts and schemes throughout the film to the delight of the audience and the frustration of her suitors and friends.

Chloe Sevigny (as Susan’s supportive best friend) and Tom Bennett (playing a hilariously wealthy fool) are paired with Stillman’s distinctive biting dialogue and careful attention to detail in sets and prices. But Beckinsales’ transcendent performance is combined, one of the most recent examples of how comedic roles are ignored during the awards season. PV

On Prime Video, Love & Friendship may be streamed.

14. Multiple Maniacs

Criterion’s early transgression plays a part in creating a shockingly high-tech comedy based on batshit nutso, who, in turn, is constructing a horrifying sequence in which Lady Divine (Waters’ go-to collaborator) spirals out of control on a murder spree and her ex-lover (David Lochary) plots to kill her first with other members of the Waters Dreamlander acting troupe. Today, it would be almost impossible to do what Waters pulled off

Multiple Maniacs are available on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

15. The Paper Tigers

The eponymous Paper Tigers stars Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, and Mykel Shannon Jenkins, according to Tran Quoc Bao. After a lifetime of intense training and hard fighting, they have grown into extremely poor middle-aged nobodies. However, the three swear an oath to avenge his memory and bring his killer to justice. If this sounds serious, please know this falls into the Apatowian camp of Dumb Man. TE

The Paper Tigers is available on Netflix.

16. Plus One

The best come from a more personal, filmmaker-driven environment, according to Jeff Chan and Andrew Rhymer. Plus One, from Pen15, was released at the Tribeca Film Festival before quietly settling into a place on Netflix and has been largely overlooked. Maya Erskine (Pen15) and Jack Quaid (The Boys) are both well-known individuals who have seen all of their friends hitched and become go-to favorites for the endless tenancies they have to offer. A gem that might easily

Plus One is now available on Hulu.

17. Tampopo

This 1985 ramen western is a hilarious romp that is also one of the most spectacular food depictions ever shown. When a pair of truck drivers stop at a run-down ramen shop, they befriend the widowed owner and assist her to transform the restaurant’s fortunes around. Tampopo is a cinematic feast that includes community, passion, and human nature.

Tampopo is available on HBO Max and Criterion Channel.

18. To Be or Not to Be

Ernst Lubitsch’s 1942 masterpiece is a horrifying and touching anti-war film about a group of actors who exploit their theatrical abilities to dupe Nazi soldiers in occupied Warsaw. However, when Germany invades and a Nazi spy attempts to expose the Nazis to a list of secrets of resistance fighters, the troupe uses every theater trick in the book to outmaneuver the nazi (including a visiting Hitler himself).

To Be or Not to Be is a famous film in American cinema’s history, which is marked by hilarious repeated gags, disguises galore, and a rock-solid emotional foundation of a group of people trying to search for each other in the face of evil. PV

HBO Max and Criterion Channel can stream To Be or Not to Be.

19. The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience

In 2019, The Lonely Island made this musical film a spoof of Beyonce Lemonade focusing on Jose Canseco and Mark McGwires’ notorious home run streak out of nowhere.

Through poetry, abstract imagery, and profane lyrics, The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience explores Canseco and McGwire’s shared psyche. With songwriters like Stab that needle in my ass until I am rich, Andy Samberg finds McGwire impeachable to save his life as Canseco raps about his treatment for the minor. MP

The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience is now available on Netflix.

20. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Yes, we can agree that musician biopics are a little played out, too. Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is certainly an example of the many films that have evolved from a box office attack to a cult hit over time, led by a stellar lead performance by John C. Reilly as Dewey Cox, a hilarious supporting turn by Tim Meadows as Dewey’s drummer, and a non-stop avalanche of notes as silly as they are ecstatic

With ads, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is available for download on Hulu and Peacock.

21. Wheels on Meals

In the 1980s, few creative teams developed the same level of skill that Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao achieved. Wheels on Meals is one of the best of an outrageously good group of movies (and my personal favorite) set and shot in Barcelona, where they meet a Sammo Hung, a couple of cousins who run a food truck (with skateboarding tricks to boot) and discover themselves enamored with a local woman.

A video-based on Wheels on Meals features some of Jackie Chan’s most impressive fight scenes, as he prepares for the legendary kickboxer Benny Urquidez (the two would later fight again in Dragons Forever) who at the time was among the world’s most famous and successful fighters. The whole movie is worth it, although the fact that it’s possible to see their six-minute marathon fight session on YouTube.

Project A, which was released a year before, features one of the most spectacular and jaw-dropping activities of Chans’ illustrious career. PV

With Plex advertising, Wheels on Meals is available for free.
